Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has assigned the People’s Committee of Dong Nai Province in southern Vietnam to oversee investment in the Bien Hoa airport project, located in the heart of Bien Hoa City, under the public-private partnership (PPP) format.

On Wednesday, Ha signed a directive endorsing a proposal for the project previously jointly put forward by the Dong Nai People’s Committee, the Ministry of Transport, and the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

He called upon the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, as well as relevant agencies, to provide support to Dong Nai during the project’s implementation phase.

The project will be carried out within the premise of Bien Hoa Airbase, situated in Tan Phong Ward at the heart of Bien Hoa City, which is the capital of Dong Nai.

The airbase was originally constructed in 1955, according to the Vietnam News Agency. Currently functioning as a military airport, it features two concrete runways, each measuring 3,050 meters long and 45 meters wide.

According to the master plan for the development of the national airport system for the 2021-30 period, with a vision to 2050, Bien Hoa Airbase seves as both a civil and military airport between 2021 and 2030.

The project is poised to take advantage of its close proximity to major residential areas — about 15km from Di An City in neighboring Binh Duong Province, 18km from Thuan An City in Binh Duong, 21km from Tan Uyen Town in Binh Duong, 23km from Thu Dau Mot City in Binh Duong, and 17km from Thu Duc City under Ho Chi Minh City.

In connection with nearby airports, it is approximately 28km northeast of Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City and 42km northwest of the under-construction Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai.

The project plans to zone 50 hectares out of the 967-hectare area of the airbase to accommodate up to five million passengers annually.

With the commencement of civil aviation operations at Bien Hoa Airbase, Dong Nai will be the first locality in Vietnam to have two airports serving both civil and military purposes simultaneously.
